Higgins Bicycle

A Higgins bicycle is a great bike to own, especially if you are interested in vintage and antique bikes. These bikes started being produced in the early 1900's and became a popular means of transportation. Whether people wanted to go to the grocery store, a friend's house, or to a restaurant, a bicycle was usually the only way to get around.

Most of these frames were hydrogen blazed and the weight of nearly 71 pounds. Nowadays, bikes have become extremely fancy and there have been many extras that have been added on including shocks, chain guards and handle breaks. When Higgins bicycles were made, the only extras that were added was a basket on the back and maybe a light on the front. The Higgins Bicycle began life as a brand name under retailer Sears Roebuck & company. In the early1900s J.C. Higgins to be exact, was a brand name owned by Sears & Roebuck. Sears contractors would use the brand name for a line of sporting goods produced around the country in the United States and Europe, as well.

After World War ll Sears & Roebuck decided to withdraw the Elgin brand of bicycle. All Contracts for construction of bicycles would carry the premier name Higgins Bicycle. The bicycles construction was to Sears design and specifications by different manufacturers. Prices for the bicycle would vary according to the region of manufacture but were around sixty five dollars. Designs, colors, and specifications would vary from year to year.
